‘Gentlemen of Bacongo’ is photographer Daniele Tamagni’s brief exhibition depicting the impeccably dressed darlings from the heart of the Congo. Also a book, the photographs explore the phenomenon of sapeurs, a clique of extraordinarily dressed dandies from the Congo. In the midst of war and abject poverty, these men dress in tailored suits, silk ties, and immaculate footwear.
Sir Paul Smith has written the preface, and supposedly his SS10 collection was entirely inspired by them. It easy to see their influence though; in a country so plagued by civil war, famine and hardship their Dandy sensibilities offer an element of comic relief.
